A perfect example of a refreshing summer beer, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is a classic German wheat ale in a brewery lineup that includes a Munich lager, an Oktoberfest Marzen and Wiesn as well as the strong Salvator. These beers are brewed by Paulaner Brauerei in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It was established in 1634 in Munich by the Minim friars of the Neudeck ob der Au cloister. The name of the Paulaner brewery refers to this order of friars that resided in Munich who were part of the order of Saint Francis of Paola. Paulaner is one of the six breweries who provide Oktoberfestbier for Oktoberfest.
The Hefe-Weizen is a 5.5% wheat beer (hefeweizen) with a cloudy orange color and a satisfying flavor of bananas and wheat. It should be served in a hefeweizen glass, which incidentally is the go-to larger size glass for many American sports bars serving any and all of their beers, regardless of whether the glass is appropriate to the beer style. When pored properly, the head of this beer is thick and nearly tops the glass, with the cloudy beer resting invitingly underneath.
Found in 6-packs of 12oz bottles, this beers makes a perfect Saturday afternoon beverage after a day of yard work, or sitting in an outdoor biergarten if one is lucky enough to have one nearby. Paulaner also makes a dunkel version of this beer, which is a slightly darker dunkelweisen ale that is not to be confused with the dunkel lager style.
